Texas Traffic School Requirements

In Texas, eligibility for traffic school operates under a citation dismissal framework governed by Texas Code of Criminal Procedure article 45A.451. To qualify for a Driving Safety Course dismissal, a driver must meet several criteria: possess a valid driver's license at the time of the offense, enter a plea of guilty or nolo contendere (no contest), not have completed a Driving Safety Course within the preceding 12 months, and have committed a speeding violation of no more than 25 miles per hour over the posted speed limit. Drivers approved for the course must complete it within 90 days of enrollment. The state generally limits course completion to once per 12-month period.
Eligibility often depends on factors beyond these baseline requirements, including the specific offense charged, the driver's complete driving history, and the discretion of the court handling the citation. Accordingly, individuals should confirm their eligibility directly with the court that issued the citation or contact the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles.
